' Beach head '- Sergeant, United States Infantry, Normandy, June 1944

Representing those G. I's who stormed ashore on Utah and Omaha beaches on the morning of June 6th 1944, the real Private Ryans.

This man, armed with the effective .45 caliber Thompson sub machine gun, is wearing the ubiquitous ' battle bowler ' and lightweight ' Ike ' jacket, named after General Eisenhower, favoured by many in the U.S. forces, his rank shown by the three inverted chevrons on his upper arms. His woolen trousers are tucked into canvas gaiters. He has discarded his pack to be less encumbered and his equipment consists of not only the standard rifle ammunition pouches, but also 4 extra pouches with magazines for his weapon.
